A/N: Well, I've been procrastinating for too long, here's my first fic!
Summary: River has theories about why Simon gravitates to Mal. Set after BDM, when River's head's a little clearer.

There are many reasons why Simon would gravitate to Mal. River had theories on it, drawn in pencil on wrinkled paper in her room. All the reasons mapped out, showing why he’d move on. Stop seeing her as the be-all and end-all of his existence.

 

She knew she made more sense these days, was more independent, even flew Serenity herself. Like a leaf on the wind, but that same wind blew Wash and the Shepherd away, leaving Simon clinging to the few people left, or so she thought. But Simon had grown up, and he didn’t cling anymore.

 

It could also be the fact that Mal was very different to him. That hypothesis went out the window when she found them both in the infirmary, watching from one of her hidey holes on Serenity. They were cataloguing the medicine together, and laughing at something, and she heard the same thoughts in both their heads.

 

The only other alternative was dismissed when Simon did his monthly health check, proving it wasn’t temporary madness.

 

A few months later, River had a new theory: it could be bunnies.
